Summary of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will use a multidisciplinary approach to integrate microbiology, molecular biology, genomics and microbiome research to characterize the microbiome of camelina, being developed as a bioenergy crop for the Pacific Northwest with support from the Department of Energy. The project will also look at the role of the microbiome in nitrogen use efficiency of camelina. The Paulitz lab also works with the microbiome of wheat, and how rotation crops such as canola, camelina, and pea affect the microbial communities in the subsequent wheat crop. The Paulitz lab does both applied field research and molecular biology research, focusing on soilborne pathogens, both fungi and nematodes. The successful candidate will have experience in culturing and maintaining bacterial isolates, extracting DNA, PCR (both conventional and quantitative), amplicon-based sequencing, and NGS data analysis. They will be competent in R programing, and the use of data analysis pipelines such as DADA2 or UPARSE to delineate amplicon sequence variants (ASV) and assign taxonomic identities using RDP, Greengenes and other databases. They will be able to analyze both alpha and beta diversity using NMDS, PERMANOVA and other standard ecological analyses, and differential abundance algorithms. The Postdoctoral Research Associate must be a competent writer, capable of writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications. They will collect, organize and analyze bacteriological, microbiome and NGS data, record data in laboratory notebooks, prepare scientific manuscripts, assist colleagues in the laboratory on other projects and in day-to-day maintenance of laboratory function.
