Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for the Center for Emerging & Re-emerging Pathogens within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction and mentorship of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist III will contribute to investigations of interactions between macrophages and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The major focus will be understanding the initiation, progression, and resolution of innate immune responses triggered during infection and how M. tuberculosis evades these responses. A combination of host and bacterial genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and mouse infection models will be used to investigate host and bacterial factors of interest. The Research Teaching Specialist will also assist with lab management duties, including stocking lab supplies, updating lab databases, and maintaining lab equipment.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Help characterize the host response to M. tuberculosis in macrophages and in mouse models of infection.
Perform cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry experiments, including molecular cloning, cell line generation/validation/maintenance, microscopy, protein interaction/stability/localization studies, and DNA/RNA/protein isolation/quantification.
Assist in performing and analyzing host and bacterial screens using CRISPR libraries and transposon libraries.
Assist in performing and analyzing mouse infection studies.
Manage and maintain lab supplies, stocks, equipment, inventories, and databases, and help evaluate and improve lab management practices as required.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Duties include cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, and immunology research activities, which includes training in BSL3 practices and willingness to work with virulent M. tuberculosis.
Must be available to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays when necessary to meet deadlines.
