Direct supervision of lab technicians in execution of winery laboratory operations. Responsible for maintaining company objective relating to quality, safety, sanitation and efficiencies.Â Â This position follows standard work methods and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible.Â
Provide training, leadership supervision, and support for department employees.
Hiring of seasonal interns/temps for staffing the lab.
Ensure daily analyses are performed safely, accurately, and timely.
Develop and maintain laboratory methods, quality assurance and chemical hygiene program.
Sample barrels and tanks for routine analysis and as requested by Winemaking.
Ensure that all wine lots have current and complete analysis and input analytical data as needed; work with Winemaking to track and monitor wines.
Coordinate the setup and cleanup of all winemaking and production tasting and blending events.
Coordinate grape sample analysis with grower relations and estate vineyard teams; Process grape samples.
Research existing and develop, validate, and implement new methodologies and processes (SOPâs) that support Winery and Quality Organizational goals.
Ensure QA/QC practices and procedures are followed in the laboratory per company policies.
Ensure that all quality data are recorded and maintained appropriately.
Analyze quality data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained through regularly scheduled PM; effectively troubleshoot analytical instrumentation/methodology to resolve analytical discrepancies and achieve accurate data for the Winemaking team.
Manage monthly and annual monitoring of the laboratory budget, and the purchase of lab operating supplies and analytical equipment within approved budgets.
Develop proficiency of lab staff in the performance of all analyses to ensure rigorous compliance with the highest standards of precision and accuracy for approved methods.
Oversee writing, updating and maintaining laboratory procedures, including an up to date chemical inventory and SDS binder.
Assist front of house and winemaking with issuing Quality Nonconformance on products
Maintain micro hold back inventory
Maintain the winery HACCP and GMP programs, keeping all documents current and keeping winery staff up to date on pertinent developments in the wine industryâs responsibilities with regards to FSMA/GMPs and FDA inspections; participate in audits and inspections as appropriate.Â
Serve as point person for inter-laboratory corroborative Quality testing programs.
Provide necessary support and feedback to all internal and external customers and validate the customer needs have been met or exceeded
Bachelorâs degree in chemistry, microbiology, or other related science discipline
Experience in an analytical laboratory (preferably in food/beverage)
Proficiency of MS Word and Excel Essential
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
Proficiency in MS office
Experience with HACCP, FSMA and GMPs
3+ years of supervisory experience
