Summary of Duties:
The incumbent will establish and lead an integrated and collaborative weed science research and Extension program in irrigated agriculture that serves the needs of clientele in central Washington production areas.
The Assistant Professor and Extension Weed Scientist will develop a nationally recognized, integrated research and Extension program in weed science. The successful candidate must acquire competitive extramural funding from state, regional, and national agencies and agricultural industry stakeholders to support this comprehensive program. The incumbent will disseminate information by publishing results in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and Extension media, delivering presentations at scientific conferences and grower meetings, and using other modern communication platforms. The person hired is expected to work collaboratively with other scientists, the grower community, agronomists, plant breeders, extension professionals, crop consultants, agricultural engineers, and other stakeholders. Teaching responsibilities will include the mentoring and supervision of graduate students and assistance with CSS course delivery as needed by the department. Other duties include serving on CSS, IAREC, CAHNRS and WSU committees.
The Weed Scientist will participate in the successful integration of weed control practices into irrigated crop production systems of central Washington. Research and extension emphases may include but are not limited to weed biology and ecology, weed-crop interference, and cultural, mechanical, chemical, and biological control strategies incorporating, when possible, innovative technologies such decision support tools, AI and machine learning, Internet of Things, robotics, and drone technologies. Herbicide-resistant weeds are an increasing issue that may warrant attention by the incumbent, as are weeds as alternative hosts for crop pests. There are more than 200 different crops grown under irrigation in the Yakima valley and Columbia Basin, providing the successful candidates with a plethora of research opportunities. Strong commodity support exists for many of the major crops, including potatoes, grass seed, grapes, apples, stone fruit, small fruits, hops, and mint.
THE DEPARTMENT OF CROP AND SOIL SCIENCES (CSS)
Faculty, staff, and students in CSS are committed to improving the long-term sustainability of agricultural systems through research, teaching, and extension. Our department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Crop Science and Soil Science, with 65 graduate students currently enrolled. In addition, we advise another 15 to 20 graduate students pursuing Ph.D. degrees in Molecular Plant Sciences and the distance M.S. degree in Agriculture. Undergraduate students can select B.S. programs in Agricultural and Food Systems (with majors in agricultural education; agricultural technology and production management; agricultural and food business economics, and organic agriculture) and Integrated Plant Sciences (with majors in agricultural biotechnology; field crop management; fruit and vegetable management; landscape, nursery, and greenhouse management; and viticulture and enology). Facilities include a new 30-acre organic farm on the Pullman campus, six dryland and one irrigated agronomy farm within a 120-mile radius of Pullman, and labs and farms at research centers in Mount Vernon, Puyallup, Prosser, and Wenatchee. Partnerships with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest Laboratory, the University of Washington and other universities, commodity commissions, the agriculture industry, and family farms result in well-rounded and timely research, successful outreach, and opportunities for student internships. IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CENTER (IAREC):
The Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC) is located near Prosser in the lower Yakima Valley of central Washington. The IAREC functions as an administrative unit of CAHNRS and maintains a strong multidisciplinary focus. Seventeen faculty members are stationed at the IAREC representing seven WSU academic and Extension departments, as well as about 100 support staff members and graduate students. Three subject-matter centers (AgWeatherNet, the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems (CPAAS), and the Clean Plant Center Northwest) operate from IAREC. Three agricultural engineering faculty members, and state-of the art sensing, robotics and computational infrastructure are housed at CPAAS providing opportunities for the candidate to collaborate in the emerging areas of AI and machine learning, machine vision, big data analytics, robotics and drone-based research and development. In addition, seven scientists and several support staff belonging to three USDA-ARS Units and Washington State Department of Agriculture personnel are co-located at IAREC. Facilities include four research farms totaling almost 1200 acres, and extensive laboratories, greenhouses, offices, and support facilities. The Tri-Cities and Yakima metropolitan areas, less than an hour's drive from the IAREC, host the WSU Tri-Cities campus and the USDA Yakima Agricultural Research Laboratory, respectively. IAREC faculty collaborates with faculty at the WSU Wine Science Center (located at the WSU Tri-Cities campus) that offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for plant physiology, microbiology, and biochemistry research. IAREC faculty also collaborate with scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), national user facility located at a short distance from the Wine Science Center. World-class EMSL scientists offer expertise in fields ranging from rhizosphere research, environmental microbiology and metagenomics to analytical chemistry and high-performance computing. Earned Ph.D. degree in Weed Science or a closely related discipline with a research emphasis on weed control and management by the time of hire;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences using oral and written forms.
Experience in field research with a variety of crops, including ability to conduct efficient and effective field experiments (plot establishment, maintenance, data collection, and analysis);
Demonstrated ability to organize and lead an interdisciplinary Extension program;
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies;
Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level;
Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and Extension media commensurate with career level;
Demonstrated ability to lead and participate/collaborate in interdisciplinary research programs;
Experience supervising support staff and students;
Demonstrated evidence of teaching and/or student mentoring.
