The Media Technician will provide assistance to several different labs in the preparation of a variety of microbiological media required for research. In addition, the Media Technician will serve very important auxiliary roles as a back up to our Loading Dock Attendant when the Attendant is out of the office and as additional technical support to our Genomics Core Facility as needed to fill in for Core staff or when Core services are in high demand.
Experience working in a laboratory and/or familiarity with sterile technique and analytical solution preparation are required.
Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately. The position will start as soon as possible. This will be a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal given satisfactory job performance and continued funding and staffing needs.
Specific responsibilities include:
Work with investigators to determine solid and liquid media needs.
Prepare and maintain defined inventory of sterilized solid and liquid media and solutions as needed by the research labs.
Prepare growth media for microbes, cells, and organisms as necessary.
Maintain inventory and account for usage of materials and supplies.
Use and monitor the function and service of the autoclaves, robotic plate pourer, and other scientific equipment.
Other media tasks as assigned.
Serve as back-up for loading dock attendant as needed:
Unload and distribute incoming freight, including equipment, to laboratories.
Prepare samples for sequencing using established protocols.
Load and run sequencers.
Assist with other lab tasks as needed.
Experience working in a laboratory and/or familiarity with sterile technique and analytical solution preparation is required.
Strong attention to detail.

Excellent customer service skills.
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or related field.
Previous experience with media and solution preparation.
Experience working with C. elegans and/or Drosophila.
Experience with lab / loading dock operations and logistics.
Serving as back up to the Loading Dock Attendant includes lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday). Up to 33% of the workday may involve pushing or pulling 50 pounds when serving as back up to the Loading Dock Attendant. We currently anticipate that the Research Specialist II/Lab Media Technician will serve as backup to the Loading Dock Attendant between 35-45 days of the year.
