Under the direction of the Assistant Director, EHS, implements an occupational health program to protect the health of individuals working with hazardous materials and physical hazards in maintenance, administration, research and teaching. Augments laboratory safety services and industrial/worker safety units for workplace hazards characterization and industrial hygiene sampling services in order to appropriately characterize potential risks. Works closely with the IACUC Research Nurse Coordinator on research protocol reviews involving chemical/drug use.
Responsibilities include the following:
Plan, direct, and coordinate a medical surveillance program for employees exposed or potentially exposed to occupational hazards.
Identify individuals at risk for exposure to hazards associated with research/job tasks.
Inspect work environments and assist in the identification, modification, and remedies to ensure safe work environments.
Evaluate screening results to look for abnormal trends, potential problem areas and effectiveness of existing work site preventive strategies.
Perform annual risk assessments/health histories of at risk personnel.
Coordinate appropriate vaccinations, audiograms, respirator medical fitness exams etc. for at risk personnel.
Prepare written exposure control plans.
Provide training on workplace hazards & other health education programs.
Serve on committees as an occupational health representative to those committees relevant to Occupational Health.
Review research protocols and participation in the occupational health program. Assist with protocol development relevant to hazardous materials/agents.
Develop job/task hazard analyses in coordination with the work group supervisor and employees performing the job/task as well as the relevant EHS department technical specialists.
Provide occupational health service support to other EHS Department units as needed.
Provides 24/7 coverage of the EHS One Call emergency response number as assigned.
