The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator.

This position will work with faculty in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to facilitate investigator-initiated clinical research, identify research problems and assist in designing hypotheses to be tested.

This individual must be able to work independently with collaboration and oversight by a variety of faculty investigators on assigned research study tasks. The Research Coordinator will report to the Department Research Program Manager.

This position is critical to the success and growth of the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology's Research Program. The program plays an important role in developing innovative and life-saving care for women and neonates in our hospital system. The Department's research program has grown over the last five years, awarded funds have increased by 45% and the number of new research faculty and staff has also grown. The Department currently has 19 active awards totaling $17 million with research partners across 17 different organizations. Department investigators reach out across campus and within the School of Medicine to forge interdisciplinary collaborations to address complex health issues seeking out partnerships in Global Health, Pediatrics, Sociology, Public Health, Endocrinology, and many others.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under direction from the Principal Investigators and the Research Program Manager, the Research Coordinator will be responsible for the following activities, including, but not limited to:   

STUDY COORDINATION 60%                                                                                                                                                    

•Oversee day-to-day research-related participant recruitment and retention activities                                                

•Manage communications and maintain effective working relationships with research teams and clinical providers

•Assist in development and implementation of research project procedures that meet research objectives and ensure compliance with all aspects of Institution, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) regulations pertaining to clinical research in human subjects                                                                                           

•Design, develop, document and maintain policies and procedures for patient registration and protocol implementation to ensure that research execution meets Good Clinical Practice guidelines                                                                    

•Design, create and revise research tools with faculty researchers as necessary to ensure quality data that satisfies research objectives

•Continually assess priorities to ensure that projects are executed successfully and completed within required time frames to meet research objectives                                                                                                                                           

•Write human subjects approval applications including informed consent documents, modifications, and progress reports that meet institutional guidelines and satisfy Institutional Review Board requirements                                   

•Work with multiple internal and external stakeholders (e.g. UW Grant and Contract Services, UW Human Subjects Review Committee, Clinical Research Budgets & Billing, study sponsors, clinic teams and managers) to ensure timely implementation of each research project                                                                                         
•Maintain confidentiality of research subjects                                                                                                                    

•Maintain secure patient database/medical chart abstraction from data available in EPIC and ORCA                             

•May direct the work of student helper, research assistant or research trainee                                                                      

SUBJECT INTERACTION 20%                                                                                                                                                     

•Coordinate clinical and research appointments to facilitate protocol adherence, billing compliance, and to ensure accurate and reliable data collection                                                                                                                                       

•Recruit and screen patients using IRB approved protocol                                                                                                

•Complete patient informed consent process                                                                                                                           

•Serve as patient primary study contact person                                                                                                                      

Clinical Procedures 10%                                                                                                                                                            

•Perform clinical procedures as necessary, including but not limited to phlebotomy, finger sticks nasal swabs, and fetal cord blood, and placental tissue collection                                                                                                                            

•Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis in accordance with study protocols- label, catalog, transport and store laboratory samples

•Minimally process blood and other samples as needed                                                                                          

Administrative Duties 10%                                                                                                                                                          

•Order and stock supplies as needed                                                                                                                                    

•Reconcile and manage study budgets                                                                                                                                      

•Attend weekly team meetings                                                                                                                                                     

•Serve as a liaison between study investigators, subjects, and collaborators                                                                  

•Prepare subject education materials as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

•Bachelor's Degree in social, behavioral, health or biomedical sciences.

•Two year's clinical research coordination experience.

•Professional certification:

•Obtain State of Washington certification as a Health Care Assistant Level A within 60 days of employment date


DESIRED EXPERIENCE

•Medical Assistant Certification                                                                                                                                                     

•Prior experience handling, processing and transporting human biologic specimens                                                   

•Research-specific training in Protection of Human Research Subjects, Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA compliance, Blood Borne Pathogens, Shipping and Transporting Hazardous Materials, Laboratory Safety Compliance, Managing Laboratory Chemicals Training
