The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine and pathology. The department now employs 900 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. Our Laboratory Medicine and Pathology department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100% FTE), day shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN LEAD.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead Clinical Laboratory Technician 1's, 2's, and assigned staff.
  • Act as liaison between laboratory and clients, outside agencies, internal departments and medical staff with handling specimen management and material transport issues.
  • Perform at a technical level, various routine laboratory tests, and/or other laboratory processing and set up work to support the operation of the different sections of the clinical Hematopathology laboratory.
  • Updates established processes and procedures and develops and evaluates new ones.
  • Troubleshoots issues that arise with specimen management as well as customer service needs.
  • Provides feedback and educational training to assigned staff as needed.
  • Represents the Hematopathology Lab and acts as a resource for staff, faculty, outside clients and other departments, while maintaining established performance standards.
  • Maintain awareness of UWMC and Laboratory Medicine’s safety procedures, as well as SCCA's; implement safety rules and regulations in compliance with institution standards.
  • Train staff in safety, and maintain safety as a priority within the department.
  • Have and exercise knowledge of laboratory safety and proper precautions when dealing with bio-hazardous, radioactive, corrosive, explosive and/or flammable materials.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    An Associate Degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology
    AND
    One year of Clinical Laboratory Technician experience
    OR
    equivalent education/experience.


    DESIRED:
  • Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHRs) information systems.
  • Experience with laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

    Conditions of Employment:
  • The primary work location is at the Department of Laboratory Medicine’s Hematopathology Laboratory in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance building on SE Lake Union. It may be necessary to work in other Department of Laboratory Medicine locations in order to meet patient service requirements.
  • This position is considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
