The Operations Technician is responsible for the day to day operations for the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Science group located at OHSU within the Richard Jones Hall building (4 floors). This role supports the Associate Directors, Director, faculty and staff with building and laboratory operations, safety and maintenance, IT/AV support for faculty and staff along with Institute operated conference rooms. This person should be comfortable acting as a liaison with ITG as an ITC with related skills for computer set-up, networking access, PC and Mac support, etc. The position serves as a key liaison between scientific staff of all levels and internal (OHSU) and external operational support providers. Reports to the Associate Director of Administration.

Serve as building and laboratory operations manager for the Institute space, coordinate with DCM regarding animal facility, conference and/or meeting rooms, autoclave, cold rooms, washing & sterilization, microscopy, and other specialized research areas. Supervise projects that may include repairing equipment, assist with moving and/or installing furniture and coordinate minor alterations in laboratories and offices (i.e.. paint, floors).

Responsible for the proper functioning of the buildings infrastructure and environment, including computer network infrastructure, individual PCs and Mac computers as well as tablets for faculty and staff, heating/air conditioning and air balance, deionized water, compressed air and vacuum systems, fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, and common research equipment and facilities, including cold rooms, radioactive material usage rooms, and seminar and meeting rooms and their audiovisual equipment. Coordinate closely with OHSU Facilities personnel on core building and systems maintenance. Help troubleshoot and facilitate repair of critical lab equipment and systems.

Plan and supervise laboratory remodeling projects, minor renovations and energy efficiency efforts. Act as Institute representative (with guidance from Associate Director (s)) for major remodeling projects; interact with faculty, OHSU project management, architects, and contractors. Supervise laboratory moves and the set-up of laboratories for new faculty, including moving arrangements from other sites and analysis of startup needs. Responsible for Space Survey reporting.

Coordinate and schedule building, laboratory and common equipment repair and upgrade expenses. Assist Institute staff with specs on equipment purchasing and provide backup coverage as necessary, ensuring that campus purchasing procedures are followed. Work closely with Associate Director for authorization on large purchases for lab start-ups, core equipment, etc.

Lead the Institutes safety committee to maintain a safe work environment. Coordinate and collaborate with OHSU Environmental Health and Safety on proper basic science practices; handling of radioactive material accidents and waste, as well as acid and chemical spills. Manage the common materials and ensure that fire codes and fire inspection stipulations are met. Ensure that safety equipment is in proper working order. This includes 24/7 incident response by becoming an Incident Commander through the Research and Education committee (holding pager once per quarter).

• A bachelors degree in Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, or a field directly related to the position will substitute for two years of the required experience.
• Five years of experience with responsibility for program or project monitoring and coordination. The experience must have included program evaluation responsibility.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, problem-solve, and to work with minimal supervision. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to relate well to a wide variety of people.
• Understanding of building, infrastructure and remodeling.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
  

• Bachelors or advanced degree in a field of basic science.
• Five years of experience in a scientific, academic or technical environment.
• Advanced information technology skills, as well as knowledge of biomedical research laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements related to laboratory safety and operations.
• Knowledge of purchasing and elementary accounting.
• Customer Service background that includes verbal and written skills.
• Quick learner with collaborative personality. Sense of humor goes a long way!

Typical office environment with added basic and applied lab environment with primary daytime work schedule. Offices are located adjacent to research laboratories. Position is on call for building emergencies which could simply be communicating with researchers and/or PIs.

Able to sit, stand and move as needed to accomplish varied work tasks. Will be expected to move small items (~20 lbs) as well as use dolly, hand truck to assist with freezer relocation, shelves moved, transportation to remote worksites, etc.
