Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II for the Department of Medicine – Infectious Diseases within the New Jersey Medical School. Under direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist II is responsible for the management of a medium-sized laboratory area and will play a critical role in the successful testing and implementation of diagnostic tests for Tuberculosis, including detection of drug resistance, being developed in the Alland laboratory and submitted to the laboratory for evaluation by outside agencies. Including but not limited to Cepheid's GeneXpert tests, digital PCR diagnostics and cell free DNA analysis.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Assists in the establishments of performance standards as well as the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
Performs various research and technical operations independently or as assigned, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations and conclusions.
Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, lower-level professionals and technicians in laboratory technicians, instrumentation, etc. to develop the skills necessary to perform the required functions.
Performs analytic analysis and trouble shoots innovative new TB assays as part of the FEND diagnostic program.
Assists in planning, direction, and conduct of the FEND TB analytic core.
Effectively communicates with academic and commercial partners on the performance of relevant TB assays.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in independent design and conduction of genetic and microbiological studies, experience performing unsupervised work in the BSLIII on M. tuberculosis, ability to analyze next generation DNA sequencing data.
Experience in automated, high-throughput fluidic studies of bacterial growth.
