The Yang Lab in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine is currently recruiting for a protein biochemist to join our lab as a Basic Life Science Research Scientist and work with a team of medicinal chemists, virologists, and structural biologists in developing novel small molecule antivirals. As a member of our research team, the Research Scientist will make original scientific contributions and design and execute molecular research projects characterizing the mechanism of action of novel small molecular antivirals. The Research Scientist will write scientific sections of grant applications and progress reports and mentor/supervise junior members of the research team. This is a 4 year fixed term appointment with the possibility of reappointment contingent upon funding and operational needs.
Ph.D. in biochemistry, structural biology, or biophysics plus at least 3 years of postdoctoral training that includes prior work with recombinant protein expression (bacterial, insect, mammalian cell) and purification; characterization of molecular interactions by SPR, BLI, MST; experience with DLS, SEC-MALS. Past experience with protein mass spectrometry methods and/or structure determination by crystallography a plus. Ability to independently design experiments to address mechanistic questions. Excellent quantitative and communication skills and ability to collaborate are essential.
The successful candidate will have strong oral/written communication skills, strong accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities to achieve desired goals. Knowledge and skill in applying quantitative methods to biological problems and experiments, including analysis of binding kinetics and thermodynamics and enzyme kinetics. Experience managing and mentoring junior scientists in the laboratory is highly desired. Computer literacy with emphasis on Windows operating systems and software applications; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Graphpad Prism, and other quantitative analysis programs. Most important is that you thrive working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment and that you are willing to learn and evolve as a scientist.
