The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $200 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.
Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for undertaking research projects to study protein tyrosine phosphatases and their roles in human diseases. The incumbent will work directly with the principal investigator (PI) to make significant independent contributions to research and experiments regarding the roles of protein tyrosine phosphatases in autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. Duties will include management of mouse colonies – including breeding, tagging, tailing and genotyping - designing experiments, independently performing experiments, analyzing data, presenting data in meetings, preparing data for presentations, grants or manuscripts, laboratory management duties, and record keeping. Background in genetics and related fields are highly desired. Training in the specific techniques needed for the project will be provided.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology or genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Experience with molecular biology techniques such as plasmid preparation, PCR, RNA extraction and qPCR.
Demonstrated experience in sterile technique for the propagation of prokaryotic and mammalian cells.
Advanced knowledge of scientific terminology relating to topics of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or animal physiology.
Experience conducting scientific literature searches, including online databases and other resources.
Ability to perform project management including: planning, organizing, leading and controlling aspects for successful project completion. Ability to create control systems to identify areas for improvement, control unforeseen problems, and lead a team to successful project completion.
Demonstrated experience in analysis and management of complex data.
Proven experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including the ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with other supervisor and coworkers in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Willingness to hire, train and manage laboratory student staff. Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage. laboratory maintenance, etc.).
Proficient computer skills and proficiency in Windows, Mac OS, MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and a variety of web-based programs.
Familiarity with Cal-OSHA & UCSD EH&S safety requirements including MSDS's, hazard communication & Injury and Illness Prevention Program; laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles as well as basic first aid procedures.
Independent experimental experience working with mice as research model system, including experience genotyping, maintaining mouse lines, and performing surgery and dissection.
Advanced skill and knowledge in operation, trouble-shooting and repair of standard and specialized lab equipment.
