The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington is recruiting a full-time faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor rank on the physician-scientist pathway (without tenure due to reasons of funding) to direct the Center for Microbiome Science and Therapeutics (CMiST). This position would also include a proposal for an endowed chair. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. Associate and full professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
The Center was established in 2017 as a scientific research center to advance the development of microbiome-based biotherapeutics to treat or prevent disease, to understanding the complex and dynamic interactions between human hosts and their resident microbial communities, and to educate the community about the importance of the microbiome in maintaining human health and wellness. The Center Directorship includes access to state-of-the-art laboratory and instrumentation facilities, newly renovated office space, and an annual budget.
The Center Director will develop and expand a program of scientific discovery focused on the role of the intestinal microbiome in the etiology of human gastrointestinal diseases. Specific areas of interest are inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), GI cancers, liver disease, and metabolism. The Director will be responsible for the financial management of the Center, leading the development and enhancement of relevant teaching and clinical programs, and building a robust research program focused on increasing our knowledge of the intestinal microbiome and its impact on human health and disease. Additional goals include the expansion of translational opportunities in microbiome research with a long-term strategy for designing effective intervention trials. The Director will be expected to obtain extramural funding to support both independent research projects and the Center. The successful candidate will be expected to actively pursue philanthropy to support Center research activities..
It will also be expected they will recruit, support, and mentor additional scientists who have a research focus on microbiome and host/microbe interactions leading to human diseases within the lab setting Clinical teaching responsibilities would involve oversight of medical students, residents, and fellows during outpatient and inpatient clinical activities, in concert with the GI and Transplant Hepatology Fellowship program.
Seattle is home to a vibrant and highly collaborative microbiome research community across several nearby institutions, including the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, the Institute for Systems Biology, the Allen Institute, the Benaroya Research Institute, and Seattle Children's Research Institute. There are excellent opportunities for local collaborations, including with faculty in the University of Washington's Gastroenterology, Immunology, Microbiology, Genome Sciences, Computer Science, Biostatistics, and Infectious Diseases departments and divisions.
University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The anticipated start date will be January 2023.
The Director must have a strong record of leadership in the microbiome field and should have expertise in computational, experimental, and translational research in order to best facilitate transdisciplinary collaborations and recruit top talent from different sub-fields.
The candidate will have an MD (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in Gastroenterology (or foreign equivalent). In order to be eligible for university sponsorship for H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
