School of Dentistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1

The Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS) brings together faculty from different ends of the dental and oral health research spectrum into a single department that has expertise ranging from the modern experimental life sciences through the public health and behavioral sciences. OHS has the goal of improving the oral and general health and well-being of our diverse global population through research, teaching and service. OHS has a broadly defined mission that accommodates diverse faculty interests and expertise. At present, OHS enjoys faculty expertise in areas including anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biostatistics, epidemiology, behavioral science (basic and applied), public health, dental hygiene, education, law, medicine, and clinical dentistry including faculty members with specialty training in periodontics, orthodontics, and oral medicine. OHS also sponsors the School of Dentistry’s only PhD program as well as the combined DDS-PhD program and the Masters of Science program for Dental Hygiene. Our graduate programs provide advanced interdisciplinary training for graduate students to enable them to become academic and research leaders in the dental and craniofacial sciences, and to contribute to improved understanding of human oral and systemic health and disease. The Department of Oral Health Science is seeking a full-time Research Scientist 1 (100% FTE). The research scientist will join a laboratory that bridges the field of Geroscience (study of aging biology) with oral health. Projects range from the basic sciences using in vitro and in vivo models for translational and clinical studies. The research scientist will provide broad support for carrying out such research projects, and may need to work independently on multiple aspects of research projects. The research scientist will also be responsible for being the on-site manager of the lab.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Support:

•Develop and implement research plan in conjunction with the PI and other investigators.
•Develop, troubleshoot, formulate protocols and hypotheses
•Management of existing and future mouse strains
•Perform experiments to determine the efficacy of experimental treatments, assisting in preparation and administration of drugs, recording weights, and general animal evaluations.
•Collect, bank, and analyze tissues from strains with wide array of techniques (e.g., western blot, RT-PCR, histology)
•Culture and maintain primary human/mouse cell lines and perform cell-based assays (e.g., live dyes, proliferation and population doubling curves)

Administrative and Project Management:

•In conjunction with the PI, help oversee administrative function, including but not limited to writing and amending protocols, helping make decision regarding equipment acquisitions, responsible for safety programs.
•Maintain accurate and logical records of scientific data
•Assist in preparing laboratory reports, data analyses, manuscripts, and presentations
•Investigate and perform critical analyses of current literature to develop novel approaches to research either independently or in conjunction with the PI and other investigators

Supervision/Staffing:

•Help the PI supervise other staff and undergraduate assistants working in the lab

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

•Bachelor’s Degree in cell biology, chemistry, biology, molecular biology, other biological sciences or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
•Minimum 1 year experience in handling and working with mice
•Minimum 1-year experience in research coordination and implementation of scientific methods (e.g., PCR, western blot, histology) to make good decisions without direct supervision

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
