Position Summary: Performs research activities and analysis; implements, evaluates and recommends adjustments to research procedures. Responsible for synthesizing and independently preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a significant degree of creativity and latitude. May coordinate research operations and the daily activities of junior research personnel.
Participating in planning and/or designing of major scientific projects, studies, or applications
Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
Preparing graphic and narrative reports
Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
Performing site inspections and field oversight if field work is required
Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and/or evaluating a distinct portion of a scientific project, study or application
Researching, designing, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
Other duties as assigned Position is located in the lab Biogeochemistry Core at UI and is affiliated with SWS. Reports to the Biogeochemistry Core Facility Leader on behalf of the user group which includes representatives of other departments in CALS, CoE, and CoS.
Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in analytical chemistry or related field.
Two years of research experience beyond receipt of masters degree related to the domain of this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or related field.
Experience with specific instruments in the Core, including TOF LC/MS, DART, GC/MS, IRMS.
Two years of experience working in a research laboratory with demonstrated understanding of safe laboratory working practices.
Experience working with and analyzing biological and/or soil samples.
Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and willing to learn new skills related to the analytical requirements of the user group.
Familiarity and experience operating and maintaining analytical instruments.
Experience trouble-shooting and repairing such instruments or working with company representatives to facilitate maintenance and repairs.
Following pre-established analytical procedures or protocols.
Organizing and analyzing scientific data.
Maintaining compliance with laboratory safety regulations.
Maintaining complete and accurate records.
Communicating effectively with users and clients.
Working in a team environment.
