This project is focused on developing novel genetic approaches that may be used to combat mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria.
Under general supervision of the PI and other senior researchers, the Microinjection Specialist will independently perform advanced microinjection experiments primarily in Anopheline mosquitoes (Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles gambiae) by utilizing a microinjecter and microscope to inject DNA into mosquito egg. The incumbent will conduct advanced genetic research projects focusing on insect transgenesis, participate in mosquito husbandry, and perform standard experimental procedures (PCR, design DNA primers, DNA sequencing, media preparation, etc.). Participate in coordinating and training lab personnel in experimental and lab procedures. Incumbent is responsible for adhering to all safety and Standard Operating Procedures for the insectary. Perform other duties as assigned.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelor's degree in biology or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience. MS or PhD in related field preferred.
Extensive experience with microinjection equipment and techniques in mosquitoes.
Demonstrated expertise in basic and population genetics.
Strong demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in, basic biochemistry, chemistry, and basic molecular biology methods including PCR, oligonucleotide primer design, DNA sequencing, plasmid preparations, restriction enzyme digestions, sterile techniques media preparation, and statistical analysis.
Strong demonstrated experience with general lab equipment including centrifuges, gel electrophoresis apparatus, power supplies, and spectrophotometers.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to present data and updates on a regular basis.
Excellent organization and record-keeping skills.
Demonstrated experience and proven ability to perform work with minimal supervision under the challenge and stress of frequent interruptions and frequently changing priorities and deadlines. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously requiring detail and accuracy.
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with a diverse group of people, and communicate clearly and effectively to promote positive relationships.
Extensive demonstrated expertise and knowledge of the care and best practices related to mosquito husbandry
Demonstrated expertise in dexterity, skill, and knowledge to culture and handle Anopheline mosquitoes (Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles gambiae).
Extensive demonstrated experience in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions.
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality in matters related to work.
Proficient with Apple and PC computers and associated word processing, spreadsheet, and database software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Proven knowledge of MSDS's (Material Data Safety Sheets) and the hazard communication and Injury and Illness and Prevention Program (IIPP). Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing, safe handling of chemicals, and the use of protective items.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Demonstrated experience with vertebrate animals used to feed insects.
Proven ability to independently participate in the execution of research projects or portions of such projects, through the independent planning, organization and performing of experiments and selecting of data for analysis.
