This is a full-time position in the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (WashU). This position assists the EH&S Office in providing a safe work environment, fostering a safety culture among University faculty, staff and students, and helps to maintain the institutionâ™s compliance with federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations. This position is responsible for making decisions and judgments that may affect otherâ™s safety and wellbeing, as well as Washington Universityâ™s compliance with applicable regulations.
Maximum budgeted hiring range is up to $58,000.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Provide research laboratory EH&S support services. This includes, but is not limited to:
Conduct annual safety and compliance audits of research laboratories in assigned areas and conduct follow-up audits as necessary to verify corrective actions completed within approximately two months of initial review.
Provide technical guidance and consultation on regulatory (OSHA, EPA, MDNR, etc.) requirements as well as WashU and EH&S requirements to Principal Investigators (PIs), business managers, researchers, and laboratory support staff.
Review and provide feedback/guidance on laboratory standard operating procedures and lab-specific training; Conduct annual performance evaluations of fume hoods in assigned areas.
Utilize EH&S management software.
Conduct incident investigations.
Annual audits and technical guidance and consultation cover a wide array of EH&S support areas including chemical safety, biosafety, occupational safety and environmental compliance and all facets of research at WashU from organic chemistry laboratories with heavy chemical use to biomedical laboratories with biological hazards to engineering and physics laboratories with physical hazards, such as lasers and mechanical equipment.
Develop and deliver laboratory safety training, new employee orientation safety training and other live training sessions as needed. Conduct roll-out/onboarding of Laboratory EH&S Handbook and requirements with new PIs and laboratory personnel.
Coordinate with Facilities, Departments and PIs on departures and renovation/construction projects. Conduct associated lab closures in assigned areas in conjunction with other EH&S Divisions, primarily Radiation Safety.
Review existing EH&S laboratory policy and guidance documents and provide necessary revisions and updates. Develop new EH&S laboratory guidance documents, both autonomously and working within diverse teams.
Serve as a member of the WashU EH&S Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team, which includes specialized training.
Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., emergency and pandemic response needs).
OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is strongly preferred and required within three months of hire.
Research laboratory or clinic experience.
Master degree in basic sciences or health and safety sciences, health and safety professional certification, research laboratory experience and health and safety experience.
Oral and written (business and technical) communication skills, ability to exercise discretion, ability to make sound judgments that impact safety and compliance, public speaking, and facility with Microsoft Office applications are essential skills.
Individual must be physically able to wear personal protective equipment and lift and move heavy objects while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and fully encapsulating suits.
B.S. health sciences, basic sciences, or related field plus two years related experience or B.A. in unrelated field with equivalent four years plus of related experience.
$50,500.00 - $86,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
