Job Description: The Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Human Sciences and Design will support Dr. Debra Harris' research program by contributing to research planning, execution of research studies, proposal development and writing manuscripts for publication. This position will also assist Dr. Harris' research by managing and training the graduate and undergraduate students working on research projects and in the lab.
Anticipated start date is January 9, 2023.
Dr. Harris' research is interdisciplinary, interventional, and translational, focusing on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and the impact on human health and occupant experience in the built environment. The current focus of scholarship activity is the development of a software product that assists architects and designers with integrating evidence-based design strategies in active projects focused on health & wellness, and sustainability. Future work will include developing additional tools. Another area of research focuses on the implication of material interaction with chemical and biological contaminants known to cause injury or illness. Research inquiry evaluates how materials contribute to transmission or eradication of pathogens and chemical contaminants. Because of the work conducted on materials, another active area of research is focused on identifying ways to reduce firefighter occupational exposure to biological and chemical contaminants. Dr. Harris' methodologies combine textile science, chemistry, and microbiology to assess health risks such as cancer, endocrine, respiratory, and neurological health concerns.

Preparing high-quality and high-impact manuscripts for publication in peer review journals across collaborative disciplines
Securing and maintaining extramural funding
Managing the Environmental Forensics Laboratory
Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
Qualifications:
Expected qualifications for a candidate include:
PhD in Interior Design, Architecture, Environmental Behavior, or a comparable area of research. PhD students that are all but dissertation near defense are encouraged to apply.
Research experience in healthcare and/or community architecture and design related to indoor environmental quality and healthcare or community acquired infections, chemical exposure, or other compatible fields of study.
Clear evidence of scientific productivity
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment
