Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV (RTS IV) for the Center for Emerging and Re-Emerging Pathogens within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the RTS IV conducts research on methods to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis and drug resistance in this organism.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria including M. Tuberculosis, and select agents requiring work in BSL3 facilities including drug resistant strains.
Conducts validation studies of molecular detection and drug resistance assays.
Performs detailed MICs of above described bacteria using various systems.
Performs DNA extraction, Sanger and next generation sequencing and analysis of assay discordant samples.
Assists in the development and testing of new assays including primer and molecular probe design.
Assists testing and trouble shooting pre-clinical and post clinical trial commercial diagnostic assays.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a relevant science, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience.
BSL3 experience working with virulent CDC classified tier 1 select agents and M. tuberculosis, experience in molecular beacon design, molecular biological techniques.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bacterial and M. tuberculosis microbiological assays.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.
Must be able to work 8 hour shifts wearing protective clothing and equipment in BSL3 facility.
