Program Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

The HMH PGY2 Infectious Diseases PGY2 program provides the resident with a solid foundation of experiences focusing on patient care and the management, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases in the adult patient. The resident will complete 10 months of clinical rotations during which he/she will gain experience in both acute and critical care settings and actively participate in the care of patients - both immunocompetent and immunocompromised. Likewise the resident will work as an integral member of HM/HMH Antimicrobial Stewardship Program - maintaining existing and developing new facets in collaboration with Microbiology/Pathology and the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Licensure and employment: Texas pharmacist licensure is required within 90 days of starting the program. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.

• Other – on-site or off-site based on the individual interests/needs of the PGY2 and available with a qualified preceptor through Methodist affiliations across the Texas Medical Center

Clinical Coverage/Staffing

• Clinical coverage every third weekend on primarily surgical floors (first half of year) and one weekday evening every two weeks averaged over a four week period
• Antimicrobial Stewardship pager on-call coverage support (second half of year) one week per month—evenings and weekend
• Residents will work one major and one minor holiday

Research Experiences

• Major research project with the guidance of a preceptor and the Pharmacy Research Committee advancing ID clinical practice at Houston Methodist
• ID/Stewardship related minor project (often an MUE or similar project scope)
• Poster presentation at Vizient Pharmacy Network Meeting and platform presentation at Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference

Longitudinal Experiences

• Participation in reviewing novel diagnostics for laboratory implementation
• Participation in reviewing novel anti-infective agents for formulary
• Collaborate with Infection Control and Quality on projects as they arise
• Exposure to system-standardization and implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs across 8 facilities
• Present an ACPE-accredited continuing education activity
• Recruit for the succeeding PGY2 ID pharmacy resident
• Optional Teaching and Scholarship in Academia Certificate program through the University of Houston College of Pharmacy
• Monthly meetings with co-residents and program directors to discuss a variety of topics

Houston Methodist Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program

The Houston Methodist Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is a multidisciplinary collaboration spearheaded by the Departments of Pharmacy and Pathology & Genomic Medicine with support from the infectious diseases medical staff, infection control, IT, and hospital leadership. We integrate real-time clinical intervention, rapid molecular diagnostics, and decision support tools to positively impact patient care.
