To perform, check accuracy and report results of routine and moderately complex lab procedures on body tissues, fluids and other substances as specified by lab supervisor. To perform reagent preparation, quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance with assistance from a Medical Technologist, Medical Lab Technician Lead or Supervisor.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives and prepares specimens for analysis by establishing specimen identity. Documents any deviation from positive patient identification detected during the preparation, testing and reporting of the specimen.
Ensures suitable specimens are received and verifies specimen integrity. Performs pre-analytical steps to prepare specimens for analysis according to established protocols. Responsible for any special preparation, testing and storage requirements.
Performs one or more classification of tests: chemical, microscopic, microbiologic and other classifications according to established safety and technical protocols. Prepares and uses proper standards and controls to ensure quality data.
In conjunction with technologists, troubleshoots controls, instruments and other problems as needed. Documents actions including the use of secondary and down-time. Works in a steady, efficient manner such that an appropriate number of procedures are performed in a specified timeframe with minimal repeats.
Verifies test results as needed after review for clerical accuracy, clinical compatibility and order accuracy.
Operates instruments (mechanical, optical, photometric, automated, etc.) according to established test and quality control protocols. Performs and documents routine function checks and calibrations on instruments as required to assure proper operation before and during performance of tests.
Performs and documents preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment as specified by supervisor and instrument protocols. Tests and documents quality control checks on reagents, instruments and procedures.
Assists in monitoring supplies including dating and storing new reagents as received, observing expiration dates, checking new reagents before use, and maintaining reagent log and control systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be certified as a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or with the American Medical Technologists (AMT) within thirteen (13) months of hire date. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Minimum requirements: Associate's degree in a related field required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
