Research focused on understanding how herpes simplex virus (HSV) proteins and virus particles are transported in neuronal axons. The position will involve manipulating and producing plasmid DNAs, which will be transfected into neurons cells to produce HSV proteins that are transported into neuronal axons. Other work will involve studies of protein-protein interactions to understand which HSV proteins interact with kinesin motors that transport virus particles in axons. The position requires that the candidate have experience with molecular biology: characterizing proteins using polyacrylamide gels and western blots, manipulating plasmid DNAs, cell culture and transfection of cells. Laboratory experience with manipulating and expressing plasmids and with mammalian cell culture and transfection of cells is essential. Experience with handling viruses such as HSV or other viruses will also be valuable. Experience with culturing neurons will also be very helpful. Applicants must have a BSc, although those with MSc or PhD degrees and experience will be given priority.
Function/Duties of Position
Manipulating and producing plasmid DNAs, which will be transfected into neurons to characterize protein transport into axons.
Producing virus stocks and using these viruses to infect neurons
Passaging and caring for neuronal cell lines and imaging these cells using confocal microscopy in order to determine how viruses and viral proteins are transported into neuronal axons
Supervising an RA1 who will order supplies, wash dishes, do routine maintenance in the lab and perform experiments.
Preparing representations of data and working with the PI to write scientific papers and write grant applications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's in relevant field AND 1 years of relevant experience OR
Equivalent combination of training and experience
Laboratory experience with manipulating and expressing plasmids and with mammalian cell culture and transfection of cells is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with transfecting cells, propagating viruses and culturing neurons will also be very valuable.
Additional Details
Work Schedule:

As the state's only health and research university, OHSU brings together patient care, research, education of the next generation of health care providers and scientists and community service to improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians. The university is a conduit for learning for more than 2,800 students, providing training to interns, residents and fellows in postgraduate medical and research. It is the only place in Oregon that grants doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry and nursing. OHSU cares for more than 251,000 patients each year from around the region and takes a leadership role in contributing to solutions involving the health of the state and the nation, such as health care access and transparency, ethics and workforce shortage. Beyond providing critical health care services, quality education and cutting-edge research, OHSU also is a key economic and social force in the Northwest. With an annual operating budget of $2.06 billion and more than 14,000 employees, OHSU is Portland?s largest employer. Its size contributes to its ability to provide... many services and community support activities not found anywhere else in Oregon. For more information visit http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/about/index.cfm
