Under close technical supervision, the Staff Research Associate will assist the Principal Investigator, manage day-to-day laboratory operations, perform standard laboratory techniques, and maintain general laboratory tasks in a biomaterials laboratory.
Incumbent will be responsible for starting and maintaining mouse colonies, perform mouse surgeries, perform mouse euthanasia and dissection procedures, starting and expanding mammalian cell stocks, synthesizing polymer-based biomaterials, organize laboratory data on university/laboratory servers, writing and renewing animal (IACUC) and human institutional review board (IRB) protocols, serve as our laboratory safety officer, and complete routine laboratory duties (ordering/quoting equipment, organizing, maintenance, making solutions, writing standard operating procedures) and assist lab members with general laboratory techniques and basic molecular biology techniques (Western blots, quantitative PCR, immunofluorescence staining). Incumbent will also closely cooperate and provide direction for future postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
Functions and Tasks:Research and Analysis:
A. Start and expand mammalian cell stocks: task involves harvesting cells from animal and/or human tissue samples, growing them in culture, and freezing cell stocks for future experiments.
B. Perform chemical syntheses: task involves chemically functionalizing polymer materials, performing quality control tests using nuclear magnetic resonance characterization, and storing material stocks for laboratory use.
C. Organize laboratory data: task involves oral and written communication with information technology staff to assist with lab server set up, experimental data analysis assistance as needed.
D. Write animal and human institutional review board (IRB) protocols: in consultation with the PI, the task involves writing, submitting, and renewing animal and human protocols as needed.
E. Maintain mouse colonies, order mice, perform mouse surgeries, perform mouse euthanasia and dissection procedures.
Laboratory Management:
A. Ensure lab safety protocols are followed, and assist with writing standard operation procedures, and protocols.
B. Perform basic laboratory maintenance and management in support of a laboratory.
C. Responsible for ordering laboratory supplies, servicing and maintaining all laboratory equipment.
D. Coordinate activities of laboratory assistants and student working on associated projects.
