THIS IS A REPOST. APPLICANTSWHOPREVIOUSLYAPPLIEDARESTILLUNDERREVIEWAND DO NOTNEED TO REAPPLY. This position is designed for an experienced Research Specialist at the Journey level in the Marsico Lung Institute, a dynamic laboratory environment at the frontier of pulmonary research. Employees in this banded class are able to plan, develop, conduct, and evaluate scientific research, understand the context and implication of the research, and perform complex experiments that might require adaptation and modifications of established procedures to suit specific project objectives, based on knowledge of the literature and personal experience. The position itself is in the Animal Models Core, directed by Drs. Wanda O'Neal and Alessandra Livraghi-Butrico, with Dr. Livraghi-Butrico serving as the direct supervisor. The purpose of the Animal Models Core is to provide specialized expertise in the generation and phenotypic analysis of animal models of pulmonary disease for collaborating academic investigators and industry partners through Spirovation. Spirovation is a specialty contract research organization (CRO) affiliated with the Marsico Lung Institute and its mission is to empower breakthrough drug development in respiratory medicine by providing leading scientific expertise and the broadest array of translational medicine capabilities in respiratory research, including those provided by the Animal Models core. Overall, the Animal Models Core provides guidance and assistance in several aspects of in vivo experimentation including model procurement, generation of experimental cohorts, pharmacological treatments, experimental challenges, and comprehensive respiratory phenotyping. Moreover, the Animal Models Core provides support for model selection, experimental design, and regulatory compliance with UNC Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU), and Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) guidelines.
The primary purpose of the position is to provide qualified, long-term support to the operations of the Animal models Core with five mayor functions: 1) Data collection: conduct specific, investigator-requested studies involving animals, tissues, or primary cells, for grants and contracts. This include but is not limited to: delivery of experimental challenges (e.g., bacteria, viruses, or allergens), pharmacological treatments using an array of delivery methods, survival and non-survival surgeries, health status monitoring, comprehensive respiratory phenotyping (pulmonary function, mucociliary clearance, bronchoalveolar lavage, tissue harvest, preparation of samples for cytological, histological, microbiological, biochemical, immunological, and rheological analyses), and primary culture of airway cells isolated from genetically engineered mice. 2) Data management, analysis, quality control, and presentation for lab meetings, team meetings, grants, and publications. 3) Laboratory management: supplies procurement, instrumentation maintenance, samples archival (both electronic and physical), training and supervision of coworkers and students. 4) Animal Models Core liaison with industry partners through Spirovation. The employee will directly interact with all interested parties (industry, Spirovation administration, and Animal Models Core directors/employees) and provide experimental planning, budgeting, performance, and reporting. 5) Regulatory compliance: this includes maintaining EHS, OACU, and DCM compliance by generating and updating protocols and procedures.
