Under general supervision, provide technical support to the FPS Foundation disease testing laboratory. Conduct routine sampling and testing of vineyards, orchards, rose blocks, and greenhouse materials using standard protocols for ELISA (enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay), PCR (Polymerase chain reaction), real time PCR and/or HTS (high throughput sequencing). Work in the greenhouse planting seeds and maintaining plant materials for greenhouse tests. Assist with collection and processing of field samples to screen for plant viruses.

Tolerate extreme temperatures while working in the field and greenhouse.

Perform repetitious work. Work overtime and/or flexible hours to finish assigned tasks.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Minimum License/Certification:
Valid CA driver's license to drive UC vehicle to/from fields for collection of samples.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Experience performing large numbers of routine tests.
Knowledge of and experience with molecular methods used for the detection of plant viruses and nucleic acid extraction from plant tissues, spectrophotometer, pH meter, and thermocyclers.
Knowledge of and experience using laboratory equipment such as pipettors, high- and ultra-speed centrifuges, gel electrophoresis units, and ELISA reader to run ELISA and PCR tests.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Knowledge of and skill with buffering systems to prepare various buffers for field operations.
Computer skills using database programs (Excel and Access) to prepare results in an organized format.
Organizational skills to establish and maintain hard-copy data records.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
Skills to maintain a clean working environment to ensure laboratory facilities are clean and sanitary; shelves and counters are dusted and washed; and sinks are properly cleaned.
Skills and knowledge to recognize and report problems with experiments, procedures, and lab equipment.
Familiarity with UC laboratory safety requirements.
