The Savannah Country Day School is seeking a Life Science Teacher, to teach classes within the Middle School science department. The customary class load will involve teaching four (4) - five (5) sections of seventh grade Life Science. Curricular topics covered throughout the year include Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics, Evolution, Biotechnology and Bioethics, Diversity of Living Things, Cellular Biology, and Taxonomy and Ecology. The course builds on the science process skills that students learned in sixth grade. Students will be challenged to think creatively and critically, to use effective communication techniques, and to collaborate effectively with their peers.
To better facilitate the development of students’ science skills, the Middle School Science Department feels that it is important to provide as many meaningful opportunities as possible for students to perform lab investigations. In short, we want to focus on building scientists, rather than science students. We will not forego the standard science curriculum but will present it as often as possible through inquiry-based lab experiences, an approach which we believe will bring us in line with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and allow students to build critical skills that they will need for the 21st century. Since our science curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based, hands-on experiences, we do NOT ask students/parents to purchase an expensive science book. Our science teachers provide their students with plenty of helpful resources including some “paper” sources and materials to assist them with their learning needs. You will find that all the MS teachers are committed to reducing the amount of paper that we distribute to students. Instead of using mostly “paper,” the MS teachers will often post supplemental information, including downloadable documents, web-links, e-books, interactive gizmos, animations, podcasts, screencasts, and video and audio clips, as well as other helpful resources on their course pages found within our School’s website.
The successful candidate will also serve as a member of the seventh-grade team of seven (7) teachers, one (1) from each subject area, who advise a small group of students regarding their academics and help establish a strong advisory program that focuses on learning styles, study skills, character development and community service.
Every teacher is required to coach and/or lead an extracurricular activity or club, whether during lunch time or after school.

The employee occasionally lifts or carries objects of a light-medium weight, up to 25 pounds. Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized for data entry purposes. The exposure to chemicals or fumes is possible in the laboratory environment.
