Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks applicants for a 9-month Assistant Professor tenure-eligible faculty in meat science with an emphasis on microbiological food safety. Position responsibilities are 50% research, 35% teaching, 10% outreach and 5% institutional service. It is expected that responsibilities in these areas will be closely supportive of each other. The successful candidate will develop an independent and externally funded research program focused in meat and poultry food safety, while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The research and teaching program will be expected to contribute to departmental thrusts to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of meat production systems and associated supply chains. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching missions in the Animal Science department through student-centered teaching and academic advising. Â Outreach expectations will be focused on interactions with the meat and poultry industry as well as State and Federal regulatory bodies. Service to the department is expected.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Meat Science, Animal Science, Food Science, or a related field by the time of hire.Â
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Capability for meat and poultry research with an emphasis in microbial food safety as evidenced by a scholarly publication record.
(2) Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching and communication skills.
(3) Knowledge of and interaction with the meat and poultry industry with ability to address food safety issues (could include pre- or post- harvest, antimicrobial resistance, etc.).
(4) Knowledge of and interaction with regulatory agencies that impact the meat and poultry enterprises.
(5) Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems.
(6) Demonstrated record or potential to establish a research program sustained by extramural funding.
(7) Experience in applying traditional and modern molecular approaches to food safety research.
(8) Potential to contribute to the Department and Universityâs efforts to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Department/Program & College Description:
The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University is a recognized leader in its field, both nationally and internationally, with balanced emphasis on research, teaching, and extension. The Department enjoys strong support and interactions with the livestock industries in the State, in particular with the meat and poultry industry. The Department has excellent facilities including a USDA-FSIS inspected Meat Laboratory and a Biosafety Level 2 meat processing laboratory. The Department also has beef, swine, sheep, dairy, and two poultry teaching and research farms.
