The highly motivated, organized, and resourceful lab technician will perform independent research in the areas of bacterial genetics & physiology in a bacterial model organism. The technician will also manage various aspects of the lab's organization and maintenance, as well as train undergraduate and graduate students getting started in the lab. The ideal candidate will be organized, efficient, resourceful and able to learn new techniques quickly.

Essential and Other Functions:
% 60 Independent research
Precisely execute bacterial physiology and molecular techniques and move multiple projects forward simultaneously in a timely fashion.

% 30 Lab maintenance
Maintain lab organization (data storage, strain collection, protocols, etc) and safety compliance, manage lab spending (including salary distributions on grants), perform lab purchasing, manage hourly students to maintain stocks of lab glassware, reagents, media.

% 10 Mentor undergraduate/new graduate students
Train new students at the bench, coordinate students to collaboratively complete experiments when necessary.

 

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS and 2 years of related experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal 6 years.
Significant experience with molecular techniques (molecular cloning, RTqPCR, protein purification).
Significant experience with microbiology techniques (sterile technique, strain construction, growth assays, media preparation).
Adept in basic statistical analyses.
Meticulously organized.
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
Willingness/ability to occasionally work odd hours (ie, transportation to do so).

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in any, or all, of the following: Flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, fluorescence microscopy, protein pulldowns, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), 16S sequencing/microbiome analyses
