DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the employee will assist in research on uncovering principles of DNA and RNA damage by carrying out various biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biological procedures in mammalian cells.
Assist in performing research techniques including gel electrophoresis, preparation of DNA and RNA, plasmid cloning, preparation of microbial cells, preparation of media and appropriate growth conditions, tissue culture maintenance and transfection as well as imaging using state of the art microscopy techniques and perform image analysis and data management. Incumbent will provide general lab support including ordering supplies, maintaining common lab equipment, and performing lab safety duties by ensuring the lab is clean, safe, and in compliance with regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience OR two (2) years of college including courses in the biological sciences; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree in biology or related field preferred.
Familiarity with basic and general techniques in molecular biology, including knowledge of PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning, and plasmid preps.
Knowledge of scientific terminology related to cell, molecular and/or microbiology.
Familiarity with basic tissue culture techniques
Knowledge and skill with sterile technique for bacterial culture.
Experience with phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy.
Skill to prepare and maintain laboratory records, files, and notebooks. Ability to follow written and/or oral protocols.
Excellent (English) verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interactions with diverse personalities. Skill to work as part of a research team.
Experience with and understanding of basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges, light microscopes, balances, pH meter, incubators, spectrophotometers, and electrophoresis apparatus)
Skill and knowledge to maintain stocks of essential supplies and reagents, to purchase lab supplies, and to ensure lab equipment is running efficiently.
Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and ability to work independently with a variety of computer applications such as Microsoft Office, with willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed. Skill to set up and maintain computerized databases of plasmid and cell line inventories.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
Ability to learn new experimental methods as required. Ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project.
Basic mathematical computation skills required to maintain accurate data and to prepare reagent solutions.

Willing and able to work safely with lab chemicals and human cell lines and iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells).
Some overtime may be required.
Occasional flexible working out of normal business hours as needed by experimental timelines.

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,159 - $50,738 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
