Position Description
Position Overview: This position will provide scientific and technical support for the Hua Zhao Research Lab in the Dept. ofBioproducts & Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota. The research of the Zhao lab integrates biocatalysis and synthesis tools to convert bioproducts into valuable commodities such as biofuels, biopolymers, and small molecules.
Specific duties include but are not limited to: 70% The primary focus of this postdoctoral associate will carry out biocatalysis in ionic liquids or their solutions to produce small molecules. Major tasks include but are not limited to: customize non-aqueous media such as ionic liquids through multi-step synthesis, evaluate different enzymes and various types of enzymatic reactions, analyze samples using instruments including NMR, HPLC, viscometer, and Karl-Fisher titrator, etc., and maintain laboratory instruments.
20% The postdoc will we expected to lead efforts or collaborate on research reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication and invention disclosures, and participate in seminars national and international conferences when needed. The postdoc will also be invited to participate in, or initiate, further grant proposals to further fund this research.
10% Participation as an active member of the lab, supporting all tasks as needed to support the research team. This includes providing training and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students in the lab and participation in all activities or meetings organized by the lab, or departmental activities where postdoc participation is required, enforce the laboratory safety.
Required Qualifications: ï‚· Ph.D. in chemistry (with synthesis background), chemical engineering, or related fields ï‚· Strong experience in biocatalysis and multi-step synthesis ï‚· Demonstrated skills in various analytical tools for small molecule characterizations ï‚· Familiar with non-aqueous media such as ionic liquids for biocatalysis ï‚· Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications: ï‚· Experience with policy dimension analysis ï‚· Experience directly supervising undergraduate and graduate students in preparation and implementation of research projects ï‚· Experience with publishing peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
