The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery in the Biological Sciences Division is searching for Research Assistant/ Associate/ or Full Professors. The appointees' primary activity will be to participate in academic research with a faculty member or team studying the pathogenesis of postoperative infection, including, but not limited to, microbiome-related research, wound infections, anastomotic leak and sepsis.
Appointees will develop, direct, and participate in various aspects of surgical research focused on infection-related research to understand the mechanism(s) and pathobiology by which surgical site infections develop. We especially welcome applicants with a strong background in microbiology, microbial genetics, sequencing technology, metabolomics and basic bench techniques (PCR, western blot, cell culture, etc.) Prior work culturing anaerobic bacteria is a plus. Independent extramural funding (NIH, NSF) is desired but not required at this time, appointees are expected to apply for and develop own funding sources in time. The candidates will work with, teach, and direct the research of postdoctoral fellows (MD and PhD), surgical residents, medical students, and undergraduate students at the University of Chicago.
The appointees will have the opportunity to work across interdisciplinary teams and will work in a laboratory focused on trauma/critical care, sepsis, ischemia/reperfusion and microbiome sciences. The laboratory will be a joint effort between general surgery, trauma/critical care surgery and vascular surgery. Publication record and contributions to grants will be considered.
Prior to the start of employment applicants must have 1) a doctoral degree or equivalent, and 2) completed postdoctoral training.
