The incumbent works as a Medical Technician in the Specimen Processing section of the laboratory and draws blood from patients as necessary. Position falls under Path & Lab service. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/17/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. The incumbent will maintain the laboratory facilities and equipment and controls supplies. He/she will ensure that a sufficient supply of reagents, consumables, and equipment are available at all times by ordering an adequate supply from commercial sources or preparing a variety of specialized solutions or reagents. Using established procedures, maintains a variety of instrumentation and laboratory equipment. Assures correct quality control measures are incorporated into all procedures. He/she will recognize indicators of malfunction and evaluates validity of data. When operations fall outside acceptable limits, incumbent uses independent judgment in adjusting either the procedure or the mechanical device used in the operation to bring it into good quality control. Preferred Experience: Should have experience in receiving specimens for all testing into the laboratory, verify the accuracy and completeness and should be able to prioritize requests for emergency orders and notify technologists of impending work. BASIC REQUIREMENTS/Individual Occupational Requirements: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique and various phlebotomy equipment used in collection of blood. This includes using special drawing techniques and assuring that proper tubes are used and the correct amount of blood is drawn. Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time to insure proper identification. This includes such things as replacing bed rails (in triage), removing tourniquets and wearing gloves.
