Position Summary

We are looking for a collaborative and motivated individual to fill a Staff Scientist position. This role will include participating in ongoing research projects, contributing to the day-to-day infrastructure of the lab, and maintaining mouse colonies.

Sarcomas are a rare group of over 80 types of tumors of mesenchymal origin that can be divided into 2 categories: soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and bone sarcomas. In 2018, the incidence of all sarcomas was 15,000 patients, of which soft tissue sarcomas represented 80%. For high grade non-metastatic soft tissue sarcomas, the standard of care treatment involves surgical excision, chemotherapy, and adjuvant radiation. Despite this multimodality approach, the risk of relapse remains high at 50%, with most of these representing metastatic failures. Identification of better systemic treatments to prevent relapse are needed.

Our lab focus is on the understanding of tumor metabolism, metabolism-tumor microenvironment interactions, and mechanisms of treatment escape in sarcoma. The ultimate goal of our group is the development of new targeted therapeutics to sarcoma and the improvement of current cancer treatments.

In our laboratory, we utilize a variety of metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and molecular biology techniques to elucidate the underlying biology of sarcoma and identify therapeutically actionable targets in a highly supportive and collaborative environment. In this pursuit, we make extensive use of both mouse models and primary tissues.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
• Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
• Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
• Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
• Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
• Conducts literature searches related to research project.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills and a willingness to perform mouse work is highly preferred.
• Analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner.
• Computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data.
• A background in biology, biochemistry, microbiology or related field is highly desirable.
• Previous basic or translational laboratory experience is highly preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively. 
• Ability to perform, trouble shoot, and analyze experiments.
• Excellent record keeping skills.

Required Qualifications

Masterâ™s degree with four years of experience in research lab operations. An equivalent combination of education and experience equaling nine years may substitute for this requirement.

Salary Range

$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
