Under supervision, assist with day to day operations and maintenance in the brewery for the benefit of the department of Food Science and Technology as part of a brewing program that is acknowledged as the best in the nation and of international repute. Responsible for interpretation and implementation of brewery policies and procedures related to safety and use of equipment in support of teaching, research, and outreach. Perform routine and specialized brewery duties, including brewing beer, monitoring fermentations, performing cellaring and packaging activities, and conducting analytical measurements using various pieces of equipment. Assist students, researchers, and visitors with brewery research and equipment. Responsible for cleaning and maintenance of brewery equipment, including electrical wiring, plumbing, and carpentry as well as maintenance of chemical inventory and annual safety certifications. Provide support for principal investigators (PIs), brewer, students, and staff to facilitate research and classroom instruction, including course laboratories. Participate in execution of brewing courses and train graduate and undergraduate students in proper use of equipment and brewery safety.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Brewing, or five years' experience working in a brewery or brewing laboratory.
Experience with beer production from raw materials through packaging and using brewing and laboratory equipment.
Experience with principles of food chemistry and food analysis, principles underpinning relevant analytical equipment such as pH meters, spectrophotometers, gas analyzers, density meter, foam analyzer, haze meter, colorimeter, mashing baths, fermenter, etc).
Experience with maintaining, implementing, and teaching brewery safety procedures.
Interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain professional relationships and to effectively interact and communicate with a diverse group of people, including students and professional staff, colleagues, industry personnel, and the university community.
Skills to organize and prioritize a series of simultaneous and potentially conflicting priorities while maintaining a productive and cohesive work environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a commercial brewery operation and a formal qualification in brewing science (either at the degree level or the Diploma Examination qualification of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling).
Basic skills working with hand tools and light power tools for light construction and equipment installation.
Skills to present research brewing practices to individuals or to large groups at conferences. Knowledge of UC Davis policies and procedures and campus resources.
