Position Description It is preferred that the successful candidate be nationally and internationally recognized, with strong academic, or industrial experience, or both, in enology and fermentation science and technology. The candidate will become an integral part of the departments of Food Science and Technology (FST) and Horticultural and Crop Sciences (HCS) and is expected to build an internationally recognized program of enology for wine production, wine science, fermentation science, microbiology, and chemical and biological analysis. The individual must show dedication to excellence in research and teaching and a strong commitment to collaborate with ongoing extension activities to promote community engagements and wine production activities with Ohio wineries. This position will focus on enology research but could also integrate wine, cider, mead, distilled spirits, beer, and the science of other fermented foods that are commensurate with the four external environment goals of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, which are Sustainability, One Health, Rural-urban interface, and Leadership in the field.
Performance Objectives Responsibility for Research and Teaching
It is expected that the candidate will lead interdisciplinary research proposals submitted to federal granting agencies within the area of enology and fermentation science and to local organizations such as the Ohio Grape Industries Committee (OGIC). For research, it is expected that the successful candidate will lead a team whose mission is to develop and broaden viticulture and winemaking practices that enable winemaking operations in Ohio and the Great Lakes Region to stay at the forefront. For teaching, it is expected that the candidate will teach about one course per year to support both departments' programs and/or engage in teaching collaborations in the two departments. A list of expected taught courses may include Wine Appreciation, Principles of Vinification and/ or Brewing Science, Fermentation Technology, Online -Winemaker Certification classes, and team-teaching courses where Fermentation Microbiology and Processing and related subjects may have an impact in the FST and HCS areas.
Responsibility for Extension Represent the Enology Research Program in the organization and operation of annual events such as the Ohio Grape and Wine Conference and winery site visits for disseminating important results of research trials and production advice; collaborate with the enology outreach specialist in organizing, performing, and presenting at workshops, field days and other enology extension related events; and contribute to writing and editing of OSU extension publications and handouts.
Specific Expectations and Responsibilities
Teach approximately one course per year in Enology and Fermentation Principles with application to food and beverage production.
Cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds and commitment to promoting a culture of inclusivity within FST and HCS disciplines and related professions.
Develop and/or expand an independent research program aimed to integrate FST and HCS disciplines by securing extramural funding, presenting research results at national and international meetings, and producing impactful publications.
Collaborate with the Enology Outreach Specialist in the development of an impactful extension program benefiting Ohio commercial winemakers and other potential fermented beverage and food industries.
Advise graduate and undergraduate students in the FST and HCS departments and undergraduate honors students.
Work with university faculty and staff of the FST and HCS departments and/or OSU extension, government agencies, non-government organizations, and/or community groups to advance the land grant mission of the college and university.
Serve the FST and HCS departments, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.

Position Track: Full-time, Tenure Track, 9-month appointment
Position Location Wooster campus. It is expected some travel to Columbus will be required for collaborative teaching efforts with FST and HCS.
Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D. in Enology, Food Science, Fermentation Science, Fermentation Microbiology, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, or related field is required. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrated expertise in conducting applied and/or basic research in wine production and other fermentation technologies with application to the beverage and food industries.
Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty members tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

Department/School Information The Departments of Food Science and Technology (FST) and Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) are committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in our professions.
Department of Food Science and Technology is in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. It combines academic excellence with state-of-the-art facilities and value-added experiences to prepare students to be the next generation of industry and academic leaders. Currently, the department employs 22 faculty and 30 staff members and is home to several centers (https://fst.osu.edu/research-and-centers) engaging globally to make scientific discoveries and work to solve the worlds food problems. Major degrees offered for undergraduates include Food Science and Technology, Food Business Management, and Culinary Science. The Department also offers a strong graduate program awarding MS and PhD degrees. There are approximately 125 undergraduate and 95 graduate students enrolled in the program.
Horticulture and Crop Science is a department within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. It provides expert-led hands-on academic experiences, award-winning research opportunities, and a robust presence in Extension. Currently, the department employs 36 faculty members and 61 staff members. Horticulture and Crop Science works with members of different industries to explore innovative plant science research. The majors offered by Horticulture and Crop Science are Professional Golf Management, Sustainable Agriculture, and Sustainable Plant Systems, with specializations in Agroecology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Biosciences, and Turfgrass Science. The department hosts 143 undergraduate students and 45 graduate students enrolled in its programs.
