Position Summary

A full-time position (85% research and 15% teaching) is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University under the supervision of Dr. Irene Xagoraraki. The candidate will contribute to a project focused on wastewater surveillance to identify endemic and emerging diseases. This collaborative effort involves the City of Detroit, local health departments, the Great Lakes Water Authority, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Responsibilities include molecular microbiology laboratory work and data analysis. Strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and public health professionals in a fast-paced environment are essential. Additionally, the successful candidate must be capable of teaching a traditional undergraduate environmental course. We aim to fill this position as soon as possible. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on performance, funding, and mutual agreement.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Environmental Engineering

Minimum Requirements

• Earned PhD degree in environmental engineering or a related field.
• Significant experience (including published papers) related to wastewater-based epidemiology projects in urban areas in the US.
• Must be capable of teaching a traditional undergraduate environmental course.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated.

Desired Qualifications

• Strong laboratory skills and data analysis skills.
• Significant experience (including published papers) related to wastewater-based epidemiology projects in urban areas in the US.
• Certification for College Teaching at MSU next week (3-day workshop).
