Job Overview
UC?s Department of Biological Sciences is looking to annual adjunct instructors for the academic year. The main responsibility of the candidates will be to instruct Freshman Biology labs, although there may be opportunities to instruct with Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, or other biology-related courses depending upon the candidate?s expertise and the Department?s needs. Appointments are renewable based upon departmental need, enrollments, and teaching performance.
Teaching is assigned on a semester-by-semester basis in 1 to 3 credit-hour sections; office hours are required to meet with students as needed. Classes may be day or evening. Every effort will be made to accommodate schedule preferences; however, individual teaching assignments will have to be made within the confines of the overall schedule. Consequently, we cannot guarantee preferred times and days or the number of preparations.
Rank and compensation are based on experience and academic credentials. While the appointment involves typically teaching 6-8 laboratory sections in each of Fall and Spring semesters, compensation and benefits occur across 12 months. Annual adjunct instructors are also eligible for three credit hours of tuition remission each term.
Essential Functions
On a part-time basis, conduct and teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses and seminars.
May serve as an academic adviser for students and evaluate student coursework.
Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of their responsibilities.
Review, and where necessary, respond in a timely manner to all University-related communications.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Academic degree in an appropriate disciple and prior teaching experience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present complex material to students unfamiliar with a subject.
Ability to work and collaborate with individuals from various backgrounds.
