Position Information: The goal of our lab is to improve the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of crop production in California by addressing disease challenges facing vegetables and strawberry. The Lab Assistant 2 will be responsible for supporting applied research on pathogens of lettuce, celery, and other vegetable and small fruit crops. The two main duties are: 1) identification of pathogens from diseased plants, which includes isolation into culture, DNA extraction, standard and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and sequence analysis; and 2) performing greenhouse, growth chamber, and lab experiments to characterize the pathogenicity or other traits of pathogens, which includes inoculum preparation and infection, plant maintenance, and collecting disease data. Other duties include: assisting with field experiments as needed; supervising undergraduate student assistants; and general laboratory management responsibilities including culture collection maintenance, media preparation, and maintaining a safe lab.
The full salary range for the Lab Assistant 2 is $21.47 - $25.29 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $21.47 to $23.17 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Requirements: Educational Requirements
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma, or two years of college including courses in the biological sciences Required
Bachelor's degree in a biological science field Preferred

Minimum of 1-2 years of laboratory experience Required

Ability to occasionally: a) work outside normal hours; and b) assist with planting, harvesting, or sampling of field experiments, which includes possessing a valid drivers license Required
Minimum Requirements
Experience with molecular techniques including DNA extraction and standard PCR
Excellent communication skills and ability to actively participate in a mutually-supportive and respectful team environment
Ability to document experiments, follow instructions, and maintain a safe working environment
Knowledge and expertise in aseptic techniques and microbiology
Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft and Google)
Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to train other team members on standard lab techniques
Knowledge and experience with mycology or plant pathology
Experience in a research laboratory
Experience growing plants
Experience with quantitative PCR (qPCR)
