The Facilities Division designs, constructs and maintains a dynamic, safe, and sustainable campus to continually advance its nationally benchmarked living and learning community. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental and occupational health and safety programs throughout West Chester University's campus. EHS oversees occupational health and safety, fire safety, environmental protection, and laboratory and research safety; conducts inspections; monitors and analyzes problem areas and provides safety and health training.
The Environmental Health and Safety Technician responds to and mitigates health and safety incidents and assists the EHS and Fire Safety Specialists with testing, inspections, and reporting.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate health and safety experience including hazardous materials management, inspections, investigations, and support of industrial hygiene and / or occupational health and safety concerns; excellent customer service skills; the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and the ability to collaborate and communicate with diverse campus constituents including students, faculty, staff, and regulatory agencies.
Responsibilities include:
Investigate concerns related to occupational health and safety matters including but not limited to odor, mold, noise, indoor air quality, and ergonomics
Conduct laboratory safety inspections
Conduct underground storage tank inspections
Conduct site inspections to support stormwater management programs
Collaborate with campus groups to identify stormwater management activities and best practices
Conduct hazardous waste storage inspections
Assist with hazardous waste, biohazard waste and universal waste programs including inventory, labeling waste containers, handling and transporting hazardous substances, and response to spills
Use air monitoring equipment and assist in obtaining asbestos and lead building samples
Prepare chain of custody forms
Assist with development and facilitation of employee environmental health and safety training programs
Escort contractors and vendors at work sites
Other duties as assigned
As a member of the Facilities Divisional staff, this position is deemed "essential" and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons.
Three years of advanced clerical or para-professional work which included the collection, recording, compilation, and presentation of office management or program related information, or any equivalent combination of experience and training OR
An associates degree may be substituted for two years of required experience
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel
A valid driver?s license
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of the basic principles and practices and the respective standards of measurement applied within a management discipline
Ability to use a computer to collect, compile, and assemble data and reports
Ability to analyze varied data by applying the information against interpretive standards in the formulation of recommended action
Ability to perform detailed work involving written information by preparing reports of finding according to the appropriate standards of content, clarity, grammar, and format
Ability to identify problems and recognize appropriate solutions as a result of the analysis of data
Ability to communicate effectively with employees, programs officials, job applicants and the public by relating the purpose of the contact and collecting all the necessary information required for the analysis
Ability to read, write, and communicate orally in English
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates in the performance of work
Knowledge of hazardous materials management, environmental, regulations and compliance
Experience with health and safety programs
Experience with health and safety inspections and investigations
Experience responding to industrial hygiene and / or occupational health and safety concerns
HAZWOPER, DOT, OSHA, RCRA, or related certification
Experience creating and maintaining complex reports using Excel OR experience
Experience developing and implementing training programs
