Position Information: Under supervision, the lab technician will assist in the maintenance of multiple glassy-winged sharpshooter colonies. This includes not only care and feeding of the insects, but growing multiple species of plants and maintaining a desirable greenhouse environment. The individual will also assist DNA extraction preparation for PCR analysis and subsequent sequencing. Additionally, the individual will be required to conduct dissections of adult sharpshooter insects. Documentation of the health of each GWSS colony in lab electronic/paper notebooks. This position requires some knowledge of insect rearing, insect dissections, growing plants, and the use of PCR machines. The individual will help maintain and clean the lab and support spaces as needed, and assist in general laboratory and insectary programming and maintenance.
The full salary range for the Lab Assistant 1 position is $20.01 - $23.16 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $20.01 - $21.50 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

Educational Requirements
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Tasks will include moving individual insects to various host plants, counting various stages of insects on plants and maintaining egg masses.
