Academic Job Description
Department of Food Science
Post Doctoral Associate
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world's complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.
Position Function
Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Associate to join Dr. Wang's research group at the Geneva campus of Cornell University. Highly motivated individuals with passion, research interest and training in sustainable biotechnology are encouraged to apply. The research activities will be centered on precision fermentation, bioprocess development, value-added bioproducts and waste valorization. Projects include cell-cultured biomaterials and novel foods from underutilized and wasted bioresources, development of high-throughput fermentation and biomanufacturing processes, and translational research including techno-economic modelling and life cycle assessment to foster circular bioeconomy in food and agriculture.
The relevant research techniques include aseptic cell cultivation, bioreactor operation, feedstock pretreatment and characterization, analytical measurements by LC and GC; experimental design, statistical analysis, bioprocess simulation through kinetic modeling, TEM and LCA. Additional training in genetic engineering and molecular/synthetic biology is a surplus. The position is also expected to write manuscripts for publications, present research findings in conferences, and perform in a fast-paced, creative, inclusive and team-oriented environment. Experience with funding acquisition is preferred.
Anticipated Division of Time
The position is full-time, and 100% in research related activities, including conducting independent lab work (40%), advising students in the lab (10%), writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications or patent applications (40%), and supporting grant writing (10%).
Requirements
- A Ph.D. in bioengineering, food science, food engineering, biomedical engineering or related discipline.
- Expertise in fermentation and/or microbial cultivation
- Demonstrated use of software and tools for experimental design and data analysis
- Experience in analytical quantification of biomaterials and/or food ingredients
- Expertise in genetic engineering and molecular/synthetic biology is preferred
- Experience in bioreaction engineering and kinetic modeling is preferred
- Experience in TEM and/or LCA is preferred
- Excellent written and communication skills
