Job Description
Job Responsibilities
Research Specialist A:
Large animal care, management, and handling in order to ensure ethical and humane treatment (including occasional weekend care for animals). Large animal anesthesia and sterile operations during surgical and experimental procedures
Collect and process biological specimens with sterile cell culture procedures
Perform brain tissue processing including isolation, fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, imaging, and quantification
Make stock solutions, aliquot reagents, monitor supplies, autoclave solutions, and ensure laboratory safety compliance
Assist graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in conducting their experiments
Keep detailed and accurate records of experimental work in a lab notebook
Analyze experimental data with rigorous methods
Create clear and informative figures
Collaborate and communicate effectively, respectfully, and constructively with the research team to support project goals
Occasionally lift and manage animals, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ensure safety oversight and compliance with biosafety protocols
Coordinate supply ordering and maintain inventory to ensure smooth lab operations
Oversee and maintain safety standards in the laboratory including chemical storage, waste management, and safety equipment
Prepare and maintain lab documentation including compliance records, experimental protocols, and safety certifications
Participate in lab management and help support lab set up and operations, oversee ordering, organization and maintenance of reagents, equipment, and protocols.
Train and supervise other lab members as needed, provide scientific and technical expertise and guidance for other ongoing projects

Qualifications
Research Specialist A
Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Ideal candidates will have previous experience with animal handling, surgery, and histology. Proficiency in brain tissue processing and imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in a research setting is preferred.
Research Specialist B
Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Ideal candidates will have previous experience with large animal handling (preferably pigs), sterile surgery, and histology. Proficiency in brain tissue processing and imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in a research setting is preferred.
