Albany Medical College seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Pathology. This prestigious position offers the opportunity to lead a well-established department within the Albany Med Health System, which serves as the only academic health sciences center and Level 1 trauma center in northeastern New York.
About the Department:
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine serves a comprehensive clinical network across multiple hospitals including Albany Medical Center Hospital, Glens Falls Hospital, Saratoga Hospital, and Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Clinical Operations:
The department plays a key role in supporting Albany Med’s extensive clinical services, performing:
Clinical Laboratories perform approximately 8.4 million clinical tests annually
The Blood Bank supports over 25,000 blood transfusions annually.
The Division of Clinical Pathology includes Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine, Clinical and Special Chemistry, Cellular Immunology, Cytology, Florescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH), Hematology and Coagulation, Histology, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Serology/Immunology, Surgical Pathology, and HLA Testing.
The Transfusion Medicine service provides clinical support to robust clinical, surgical, and oncologic programs, Level 1 Trauma Centers for adults and pediatric patients, and the entire range of surgical, oncologic/cancer, and high-risk obstetrical patients.
The Division of Anatomical Pathology includes Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Autopsy Pathology
51,000 service accessions in Anatomic Pathology including biopsies and large surgical specimens
7700 Gyn and 5900 non-Gyn cytology cases annually.
Position Overview & Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the Albany Medical College and the Albany Med Health System’s plans to foster innovation in patient care, research, education, and service
Clinical Leadership: Oversee Anatomic and Clinical Pathology services, maintaining the highest standards of diagnostic quality across multiple hospitals
Education and Mentorship: Guide the residency and fellowship training programs and their leadership aligning with the ACGME and College
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Promote DEI in faculty and trainee recruitment and retention
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with institutional departments to foster collaborative relationships in clinical services in addition to all College missions
Research Development: Support collaborative research activities and encourage faculty/trainee publishing and presentation of work
Philanthropy: work with the Albany Medical College Foundation to build on philanthropic partners to support research, clinical innovation, and educational endeavors
Operational Oversight: Manage the department’s operational and financial responsibilities, including budgeting, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance
Resources and Support:
Administrative and operational support for departmental functions
Access to large network of four affiliated hospitals and strong clinical infrastructure
Opportunities to collaborate with faculty across the Albany Med Health System
Autonomy in departmental decision-making, including faculty recruitment, financial planning, and resource allocation

Qualifications:
MD or DO with board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology
Academic rank at or eligible for full Professor at the Albany Medical College
Eligibility for New York medical licensure
Experience in change management, resource development, education, mentoring, and leadership, and healthcare quality improvement
