Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project ___ (E.g., Scientist) Series Fiscal Year. A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $74,100 - $82,100.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Unicellular Nitrogen-fixing Symbiosis Scientist.

Under the direction of Professor Jonathan Zehr, the assistant project scientist will work on the biological mechanisms involved in cyanobacteria-algal symbiosis, now believed to be an early-stage organelle. The candidate will be responsible for designing experiments using a variety of techniques in cultivation and flow cytometry of algal cultures in order to perform experiments in gene transcription, proteomics, protein import and support collaborative work in cell imaging using cryo-EM.

Duties will include performing coincident measurements of photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation rates using stable isotopes. The candidate will be expected to analyze data and write manuscripts and grant proposals.

Applicants with expertise or experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply: proteomics including sample preparation, data reduction and analysis; N2 fixation measurements using the acetylene reduction assay; microalgal genomics and metabolism; familiarity with cell imaging techniques including Soft X-ray tomography and cryo-EM; and marine microbiology, in particular eukatryotic algal systems.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

• Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in microbiology or a related field.
• A minimum three years of Postdoctoral Scholar/Scientist training that includes hands-on technician laboratory work as well as design and interpretation of experiments.
• Demonstrated experience with cultivation of algal-cyanobacterial symbiosis.
