The Department of Integrative Biology (https://ib.oregonstate.edu/) at Oregon State University invites applications for a Department Head with an accompanying appointment as a tenured Professor. The incumbent will hold two appointments, a 0.75 FTE professional faculty position, and a 0.25 FTE tenured Professor position, reflecting job duties in both the administrative and academic arenas during the academic year. In addition, the leadership responsibilities of the Department Head position continue during the summer months, which is accounted for through a separate summer appointment.
The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) is administered by the College of Science (COS). The primary mission of IB is to provide undergraduate and graduate education and conduct basic and applied research. The nationally ranked department combines exceptional research and teaching to address critical global problems. IB faculty have expertise in marine, aquatic, and terrestrial ecology, evolution, organismal biology, disease ecology, and conservation biology, and take innovative and quantitative approaches that span molecules to ecosystems. IB seeks a colleague and Department Head with high potential for engaging in both self-initiated and collaborative research across fields. In addition to the faculty's activities in research and service, the department has teaching responsibilities in nearly every undergraduate major at OSU, and an important role to play in enhancing student success.
The department has 26 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 2 Professors of Practice, 1 senior research faculty, 12 Professors of Teaching, 4 instructors, 5 faculty research assistants, 11 research associates/post-docs, 12 professional faculty advisors, 2 professional faculty and 5 classified staff.
The department offers PhD and MS degrees in Integrative Biology, a BS degree in Biology and Zoology, and a fully online BS degree in Zoology. These degrees include all areas of biology ranging from molecular to ecosystem levels. The department typically has 60 graduate students. Approximately 1,900 undergraduate majors engage in many aspects of biology and zoology through a varied and customizable curriculum and intensive field, laboratory, and pre-professional experiences. It is an integral part of the School of Life Sciences, which also includes the Departments of Biochemistry & Biophysics and Microbiology.
The Department Head is responsible for the management and leadership of the department's research, teaching, service, and outreach functions. The Department Head is expected to provide effective academic leadership, strategic vision, and to remain active in research and teaching. An Associate Head assists with the management of the teaching mission and undergraduate programs. The Department Head will integrate, advocate and advance equity & inclusive excellence within all aspects of their work. They will continuously refine the department's mission, vision and values to align with the mission and vision of COS and Oregon State University.
The Department Head reports to and serves at the pleasure of the College of Science Dean. The Department Head is an integral part of the College Leadership Team (CLT), working closely with the Dean to advance the mission of the College, develop strategy, and participate in decisions impacting the department's finances and budget.
The Department Head will collaborate with the Integrative Biology faculty and staff in leading the development and implementation of the strategic plan of the department and in connecting strategy to resources and budget to ensure the fiscal health of the department. The Department Head will provide leadership for faculty in the development of policies and programs to improve student recruitment and success and address opportunity gaps for Pell-eligible, First-Generation students, Students of Color, and students from other underrepresented communities in STEM. Specific duties are to oversee budgetary, hiring, and salary decisions, communicate the vision and mission of the department, to the College and University, set policy for the department, authorize proposal submissions for department mission, oversee completion of regular reporting required by the College and University, enhance diversity, foster collaborations across departments and colleges; engage community stakeholders (e.g., alumni) as appropriate, and help with fundraising for the department, College, and University. Ability to develop and articulate a strategic vision effectively and transparently to all constituencies and independently make strategic decisions.
