The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is looking for a part-time, on-call Histotechnician to support our Oral Pathology laboratory.
The pay rate for this position is $29.00/hour.
The on-site work location is in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Responsibilities involve processing specimens received in the Oral Pathology Laboratory, including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. This position is a back-up in circumstances when the full-time technician is unable to work.
This position reports to the Laboratory Manager.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specimen Processing and Preparation: 85%
Embeds, cuts, stains, and coverslips slides in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Maintains knowledge of all procedures and policies related to specimen processing, including accessioning.
Maintains knowledge of Windopath (LIS) and its use in relation to laboratory needs.
Prepares additional slides as requested by the pathologist.
Accurately files all specimen blocks and slides in a timely manner.
Rotates and cleans chemicals in slide stainer and processor as described in SOP and as needed.
Supplies and Handling of Hazardous Waste: 5%
Collects and disposes of hazardous waste in accordance with SOPs, University policy, and Local/Federal Law.
Monitors supplies and reagents and alerts the Lab Manager to order supplies as needed.
Data Collection and Maintenance: 5%
Collects and maintains data regarding slide preparations, blocks, and daily case volumes.
Monitors and records data related to lab equipment and room temperature.
Safety checks of eye wash stations.
Other Duties as assigned: 5 %
Acts as a “back up” for accessioning specimens in accordance with standard operating procedures and sending out biopsy kits to clinics.
Processes specimens for departmental research.
Participates in required laboratory safety, hazardous waste, and compliance training.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS **please detail the required qualifications on your application materials **
Associates degree required with coursework including 24 semester hours at least 12 credit hours in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory, technology; with 6 credit hours in chemistry and 6 credit hours in biology
Histology Technician (HT) Board of Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations
