The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care Department, is seeking a Researcher Assistant to join the team. We are seeking a motivated person to support gene therapy research aimed at developing novel treatments for cystic fibrosis. Our laboratory utilizes viral vector-based delivery systems in both in vitro and in vivo models to advance gene therapy strategies for cystic fibrosis. The position will involve large-scale plasmid DNA preparation, production, and characterization of viral vectors, as well as mammalian cell culture, all of which are critical components of vector development. The selected candidate will also assist with molecular assays to evaluate vector function, contribute to the preparation of reagents and solutions, and help maintain an organized and safe laboratory environment. Additional responsibilities may include occasional genomic DNA extraction from animal blood under approved protocols, followed by quality assessment and downstream molecular analysis. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the rapidly evolving field of molecular medicine and gene therapy, while directly contributing to translational research that bridges basic molecular biology with therapeutic application. To achieve efficiency and maintain compliance with grant and contract expectations, this position is necessary to provide consistent laboratory support. Having a dedicated staff member ensures timely delivery of experimental outcomes and prevents disruption of project timelines.

General Responsibilities

As a Researcher Assistant, you will contribute to the daily operations of research projects under the close supervision of experienced researchers. This role involves performing standard research tasks, including sample processing, basic data analysis, and maintaining accurate records. Your support will be crucial in helping senior team members execute complex protocols and ensuring the smooth functioning of the lab. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Perform large-scale plasmid DNA preparation, quantification, and quality control.

2. Support viral vector production, including transfection, harvest, and characterization under supervision.

3. Maintain mammalian cell culture, including passaging and contamination monitoring.

4. Prepare buffers, reagents, and molecular biology solutions.

5. Maintain laboratory organization, common stock, and equipment readiness.

6. Record and organize data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with protocols.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Range $16.50- $26.80

Qualifications

Associate's degree in a related field OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related discipline.

• Laboratory coursework or hands-on experience in DNA/RNA preparation, molecular cloning, or mammalian cell culture.

• Familiarity with sterile technique, accurate pipetting, and laboratory safety practices.
