Associate Director or Director of Chemical Engineering Laboratories
About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Department Chair, the Associate Director/Director of Chemical Engineering Laboratories manages the Chemical Engineering Laboratories, including activities related to workforce management, training, safety, instructional support, and facilities support. The Associate Director/Director applies a high level of expertise to developing technical materials for engineering and science activities related to chemical engineering including, bench-top engineering experiments, instrumentation, data acquisition, design, and synthesis. The Associate Director/Director also designs new experiments and builds cross-disciplinary professional networks that advance the objectives of the program to encourage and support cross-disciplinary interactions among faculty, students, and staff.
1) Training: Develop and maintain training procedures for laboratory equipment, tools, and other department resources including activities such as offering short courses, certifications, or practical examinations that support student access to department resources.
2) Instructional Support: Develop technical instructional support to cover a range of engineering and science activities under the direction of the responsible faculty member. This support would cover a range of engineering and science activities related to chemical engineering including, but not limited to, bench-top engineering experiments, instrumentation, data acquisition, design, and synthesis.
3) Supervision: Directs graduate and undergraduate student employees of the Chemical Engineering department working on tasks related to the support of the teaching laboratory environment. Assign tasks, provide instruction and guidance, and assess the quality of the students' work and provide feedback.
4) Facilities Support: Work with University facilities support group and department lab technician to develop, implement, and maintain facilities, equipment, software, and procedures need for the department's teaching and scholarship in a way that is accessible to students and faculty. Responsible for coordinating lab space utilization and appropriate placement and shared use of equipment
5) Safety: Responsible for working with faculty to assure compliance with University safety policies in the teaching laboratory, monitoring laboratory safety, as well as maintaining and communicating appropriate laboratory safety procedures in the teaching laboratory. Coordinate with Department Safety Officer to ensure compliance with current safety standards.
6) Professional expertise and networking: Develop and maintain cross-disciplinary professional networks that advance the objectives of the program to encourage and support cross-disciplinary interactions among faculty, students, and staff. Engage in professional development activities to support new trends in chemical engineering, and advocate for change within the department when current technologies and methods become outdated.
Title (Director or Associate Director) and salary commensurate with relevant experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A master's degree in engineering or science.
Engineering laboratory experience, preferably in an educational setting.
Ability to manage facilities and budgets.
Ability to provide instructional support in technical areas related to the ChE learning environment.
A willingness to develop skills associated with the wide range of technical areas associated with chemical engineering.
A progressive record of training, education, and experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the position. Fewer years
Proficiency with standard office productivity software.
Computer competency is critical to run equipment.
Willingness to learn new software packages.
Ability and willingness to interact and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
Preferred Qualifications
For applicants interested in teaching responsibilities, the following are required:
At least a master's degree in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
At least two years of instructional lab experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
