A Research Laboratory Technician/Lab manager position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Yifan Wang, in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI. The Wang laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular basis of host-pathogen interaction using the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii as a model organism. Please note: This position is term-limited for two years with the possibility of renewal based on need and available funding.
The candidate is expected to be in the roles of assisting in lab management and conducting research activities. Responsibilities will include:
Assisting with lab management and organization, including but not limited to ordering supplies and materials, preparing solutions and media, maintaining equipment, and completing documentation for the safety inspection.
Assisting with the design and execution of experiments, including but not limited to cell and parasite culture, primary cell isolation, recombinant DNA cloning, CRISPR-mediated gene editing and high-throughput screening, and protein-protein interaction biochemistry.
Conducting animal experiments in compliance with institutional (IACUC) and federal guidelines, including animal handling, dosing, monitoring health status, and tissue collection.
Maintaining animal protocols, records, and colony management (if applicable), including coordination with veterinary staff and animal facilities.
Discussing the experimental results, presenting research funding at lab meetings and conferences, and meeting with other research groups.
Acquiring knowledge of the related literature and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
Senior level:
BS in biological sciences with 3+ years of research experience.
Basic proficiency in tissue culture and molecular biology.
Experience with or willingness to learn small animal handling and in vivo experimental techniques.
Strong motivation for research, learning, and engaging in the literature.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and sharp attention to detail.
Ability to think critically and troubleshoot effectively.
Willingness and ability to follow instructions, and work as part of a team.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted including relevant undergraduate student experience.
Intermediate:
BS in biological sciences with 1 to 3 years of research experience.
Basic proficiency in tissue culture and molecular biology.
Experience with or willingness to learn small animal handling and in vivo experimental techniques.
Strong motivation for research, learning, and engaging in the literature.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and sharp attention to detail.
Ability to think critically and troubleshoot effectively.
Willingness and ability to follow instructions, and work as part of a team.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted including relevant undergraduate student experience.
Master?s degree in biological science or related degree.
Basic proficiency in gene editing using CRISPR/Cas9 system.
Prior experience with animal models (e.g., mice), including injections, tissue harvest, or infection models, is highly desirable.
Previous lab management experience is desirable.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
