Position Summary

The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the Cohen Center for Infection-Associated Chronic Illnesses (IACI) seeks adult Physician?s Assistants (PA) or Nurse Practitioners (NP) for multi-dimensional clinical, practice and research opportunities that will include:  (1) outpatient clinic delivering care to diverse patients seeking care for infection associated chronic illness conditions, Long Covid, HIV treatment and prevention; (2) clinical research studies related to infection associated chronic illness conditions, Long Covid, HIV treatment and prevention and opportunities to care for patients receiving long term intravenous antibiotic on the OPAT service.

The incumbent will work with a vibrant team of ID and HIV physicians and clinical researchers and within a multidisciplinary team to deliver care and with opportunities to participate in research protocols. The NP/PA will work independently and under the supervision of the core faculty in the Division, who will provide intense training and teaching. As a core member of the team, the NP/PA will have the opportunity for teaching, research collaborations, academic advancement and leadership, depending on the interests. The incumbent will be responsible for management of care for a specified group of patients in accordance with mutually agreed upon protocols within the policies and procedures established by the Division of Infectious Diseases, The Cohen IACI Center and the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Obtains and documents subjective history (interval or comprehensive) as appropriate to chief complaint or reason for visit
• Conducts relevant physical exam, documenting pertinent positive and negative findings
• Identifies a diagnostic impression and/or formulates a differential based on the subjective and objective data obtained. Formulates a goal-directed plan that includes health maintenance, anticipatory guidance and appropriate clinical interventions according to established protocols/practice agreement
• Provides and documents health teaching that is oriented to the appropriate problem and/or developmentally age- appropriate health maintenance or anticipatory guidance issues. Assesses and documents patient response to treatment and interventions
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and other specialists to help coordinate care, diagnostic testing and collection of laboratory data. Consults and/or refers as per collaborative agreements/protocols
• Assume a leadership role in patient communication, serving as the liaison between families and the care team providing consistency for follow up visits
• Take responsibility for follow up on ID recommendations: lab tests, radiology and microbiology data
• Educate patients and families regarding treatment recommendations including antibiotic treatment, side effects
• Assume responsibilities for programmatic protocols, standing orders, policies, and databases
• Progressive level of independence to evaluate clinic patients and note writing for billing purposes while staffing with attendings
• Identifies personal and professional goals for continuing education, and maintains clinical competence set by licensing requirements as well as institutional policies
• Conducts review of patient records in collaboration with peers and physician colleagues to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided
• Identifying and contacting prospective study participants and obtaining informed consent; performing required screening and on-going study evaluations; including administration of vaccines and other study products
• Determine eligibility of screened study participants through physical exam, medical history, laboratory results and other research procedures; this includes accessing electronic health records
• Performing phlebotomy and peripheral intravenous catheter placement, collection of other specimens including but not limited to nasopharyneal swabs
• Administering study products to study participants including but not limited to intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and intravenous infusions while adhering to study protocol and Good Clinical Practices (GCP)
• Conducting structured interviews with research study participants on medical and  behavioral issues
• Performing HIV risk assessments and risk reduction counseling, including testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections
• Engages in ongoing peer review and utilization review activities, competency evaluations and Medical Board reviews

Minimum Qualifications

• Excellent communication skills and a strong ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong organizational and administrative skills.

For Nurse Practitioners (NPs):

• Master?s degree or higher in Nursing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus one to two years of relevant clinical experience
• Current New York State Nurse Practitioner license (or proof of application)
• Current New York State Registered Nurse license
• National board certification in an appropriate NP specialty
• Eligible for BCLS and ACLS certification

For Physician Assistants (PAs):

• Bachelor?s degree in Physician Assistant studies or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus four years of relevant clinical
• experience
• Master?s degree may substitute, in part, for required experience
• Current New York State Physician Assistant license (or proof of application)
• NCCPA certification
• Eligible for BCLS and ACLS certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of experience in outpatient or inpatient setting
• Demonstrated interest in Infectious Diseases including HIV and COVID clinical and/or research experience preferred 
• Prior experience with phlebotomy and peripheral intravenous catheter placement for infusions is preferred

Other Requirements

• Must satisfy all clinical credentialing and privileging requirements of NewYork?Presbyterian Hospital
• Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
• Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training certification, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate, and Conflict of Interest (COI) training certification are required upon hire
